The Ensemble Laboratory

Rough Fiction in Association with The Actors Centre

Beginning in July 2010 our Ensemble Lab provides time and space each weekend for 10 core members and 6 visiting actors each week to train, experiment and develop skills together as an ensemble. The ensemble will ultimately produce low tech, low budget gig-style theatre in various spaces; from contemporary performance to classic plays. Unlike our main productions, this is an unpaid ensemble for those who wish to benefit from ongoing collaboration. Workshop sessions therefore provide training and skills development free to all participants.

The aim is to nurture a mutual understanding and shared history of work together, developing a common language emphasising a balance between text, movement and musicality in performance. We will regularly receive guest practitioners and directors to run sessions or workshops on various plays. We believe that cultivating mutual training and an ongoing dialogue between performers is essential to creating truly great ensemble theatre.

Host Venue:

The Actors Centre, Covent Garden, London

Upcoming Sessions:

12 – 4.30pm, Sunday 18th July 2010

12 – 4.30pm, Saturday 24th July 2010

Hospitals and Other Buildings that Catch Fire

by Rough Fiction

Hospitals and Other Buildings That Catch Fire

Originally produced as Inform Theatre

Underbelly, Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2005 / National Student Drama Festival 2006

Dominated by a sick child, Aimee, this is the story of a couple and their ongoing attempt to face their past and find happiness from within the industrial cityscape that engulfs them. An atmospheric and fragile portrayal of childhood innocence, violent intent and unforgiving devotion presented through a blend of new writing and physicality that blurs the line between fiction and reality.

No escape from life’s questions. InForm Theatre push the boundaries of text and performance. … a portrait of grief showing the way sickness, death and loss can scatter the human consciousness. I kept remembering a phrase an Indian wise woman said to me earlier this year: “Human beings have become so fragile. This is not the way human beings are meant to be”. The Scotsman

Highly recommended … Take some Radiohead-style alienation, mix it with some Douglas Coupland flights of postmodernist fancy, then present the whole shebang with the deconstructive flair of The Wooster Group playing Pirandello and you’ll start to get some idea of what’s in store. Metro

Painfully sweet and nostalgic work … a modern-day fairy tale.

Experience this plays eerie magic for yourself. Three Weeks

The effect it has on the audience is amazing, at times it feels as if the entire room is united in the same awkward silence. Edinburgh Guide

Rough Fiction in association with South Hill Park

The Underbelly (Big Belly), Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2009

Nowadays, whose word is truly their bond? Rough Fiction radically rework the famous Arthurian legend Sir Gawain and The Green Knight to come up with a modern-day morality tale that looks at just what we value and how far we will go to be happy. Fresh new writing, dark imagery, bold physicality and a six-strong professional ensemble. In a story of love, loss and brotherly rivalry Rough Fiction re-imagine this classic tale shedding new light on ancient values.
